Two pairs of socks,
given by the hand that gave her.

Worn by two beating hearts,
briefly slowed
on this warm bed.

Why risk it?
Why turn down the air-conditioning
just to keep faith with a gift?

Some dare not wear them.
Others wear them
as if socks were only socks.

But here we are.

On this bed,
warm with laughter,
wet with tears,
crowded by fear,
we rest for what tomorrow asks of us.

Are they a hand laid gently on us,
or a thread around our ankles?

Our newest armour.
Our softest burden.

We can only hope
that time is our friend.

One day,
time will tell us
what we were wearing.
